An utterly extraordinary Picture Jasper disc presenting what is arguably one of the most remarkable natural compositions found in this stone. Dominating the centre and right of the disc, a sweeping formation of dense black dendritic inclusions has formed into the unmistakable silhouette of a windswept tree, its trunk rising from a warm golden ochre base and its branches spreading wide and horizontally across a pale grey-white sky in a composition of breathtaking naturalism. The resemblance to a centuries-old bonsai or a lone coastal pine bent by prevailing winds is so precise and so complete that it is genuinely difficult to believe this is entirely the work of nature and not a skilled artist.
The background of cool blue-grey and soft white gives the tree silhouette exceptional contrast and depth, while the warm amber and golden ochre tones at the base of the composition ground the scene beautifully, evoking sun-baked earth beneath the tree. Smaller dendritic formations scatter into the lower portion of the disc like distant shrubs and grasses completing the landscape.
