This extraordinary Dendritic Calcite Disc is one of the most visually complex and detailed natural mineral specimens in our collection. Polished into a large, substantial round disc and displayed on a clear acrylic stand, both faces reveal a breathtaking density of natural patterning that has to be seen to be fully appreciated.
The white and soft grey calcite ground is almost entirely covered by an intricate carpet of black and dark brown manganese dendrite formations, their branching, cloud-like clusters spreading and overlapping across the surface in formations of extraordinary complexity. These are not simple tree-like dendrites but dense, cauliflower-like masses of crystalline mineral growth, outlined and separated by the sweeping concentric banding of the calcite host, which flows beneath and through the dendritic zones like a river current beneath fallen leaves. The effect is richly textured, deeply layered and endlessly detailed, with new formations revealing themselves the longer the piece is studied.
The side profile reveals the full beauty of the calcite banding in cross section, layer upon layer of fine striped patterning that gives a glimpse into the geological history of the stone. An outstanding display piece and a genuinely rare example of natural mineral art at its most complex.
